Reasons for Choosing a Single-Syllable Name

Why in the world would you be searching for a one-syllable name? Well, for a lot of reasons:

  • A shorter name can make a big impact. A single syllable can pack a lot of "punch."
  • A short name can balance out longer names. If the last name is long or hyphenated, a simpler first name might sound just right. If the first or middle name is complicated or multi-syllabled, then choosing a shorter name makes for a great combo.
  • Shorter names are often easier to remember, spell, and pronounce.
  • Many names get shortened into nicknames, but a single-syllable name doesn't need to be changed.

A Long List of Single-Syllable Baby Names, A to Z

Below, you'll find lists of lots to choose from, arranged alphabetically. I've included all the names I could find: classic and new, popular and rare, from various cultures—boys, girls, and gender-neutral.

Note: Although most of these names are short, this is not a list of short names. No matter how cute they are, names like Leo and Ava have been left off the list because although they are short, they have more than one syllable.
