What Are the Ugliest Baby Names?
I've scavenged the web in search of the most hideous names in history. Why any of these names were ever given to human babies is beyond me.
Perhaps some of these names may be suitable for a lovable but dorky family pet: at least your cat won't know how hideous its name is and, therefore, will never develop resentment.
A baby, on the other hand, may grow up to hate the name you gave them. To save your kid the humiliation that comes with a gross name, I've compiled a master list of ugly baby names.
Ugly Baby Names for Girls and Boys A–E
Addison/Madison (and similar names)
Angel (Stop that.)
Ashley (It's overused.)
Brittany (Again, it's overused.)
Calvin (It means "little bald one.")
Cameron (It means "crooked nose.")
Cassandra (It means "entangler of men."_
Claudia (It means "lame.")
Ugly Baby Names F–J
Fartel (No comment.)
Humphrey ("Hump," for short.)
Igor (It's a good pet name, though.)
The Ugliest Names for Girls and Boys K–O
La-a (It's pronounced "Ladasha"—the dash isn't silent.)
Mallory (It means "unlucky.")
Margot (It's way too close to the spelling of "maggot.")
Melena (It's a medical term for dark, bloody stool.)
Mistake (I actually saw this in a name book.)
Monster (I also found this one in a name book.)
Nevaeh (It's "heaven" spelled backward.)
The Ugliest Names P–T
The Worst Baby Names U–Z
Unknown (I saw it in a name book.)
Zayden (My eye twitched at that.)
Names Might Not Be Ugly Forever
Some of these names are only ugly for babies but quite suitable for grown men or women. Sally, Judy, Ronald, and Winston are all perfectly fine names and sound respectable for adults, but I could not imagine calling a sweet little toddler Ronald. Ronald isn't an adorable name, and it's not appropriate for a baby. Imagine saying, "Come here, little Winston, time for bed." That doesn't sound nice at all.
It's so hard to find a great baby name these days; most are overused, spelled oddly, sound too old, sound too strange, or sound too fake. I really don't have much advice for choosing a name other than telling you to make sure it has meaning to you or your family's heritage.

well as most people i do agree with the fact that most of these names are ugly and well stupid ;-; but some of these names are really and truly gorgeous and beautiful and who ever had one of these names it doesn't matter if people think there ugly or pretty know that you are blessed with the most utterly and extremely beautiful name. on the other hand this was extremely fun to read a-lot of laughter from me especially the maire Juana and the morona one there was a lot of laughing until i fell on the floor wheezing. a shame you didn't have eva on there thats my name

seriously? People are pretty and beautiful the way they are. ik its ur opinion but seriously? most of these are pretty good! Just because they named there child something bad doesnt mean they are bad parents. and this is my opinion.
Foxy on April 17, 2020:
People should be free to name their anything they want ,it isn't my place to say anything.
Milly Light on March 23, 2020:
I am truly surprised that Mildred landed on that list. Mildred is my name and I have always loved it!
Candy the Fox GachaTuber on March 22, 2020:
What. The. Hecc.
You dare to say Candy is an ugly name?! WHAT?!
As someone obsessed with distinctive, unique things like names I'm not happy. I'm actually livid (it's a fancy word for angry if you didn't know)! I'm not a mean person but I feel that should be removed from this list like these following names:
Shirley (a teacher at my old school was called Shirley and lots of kids loved her)
Diamond (there was a plush dog at my old school I named Diamond and I loved playing with her and she was super cute and she was tiny)
And no, I won't put Ruby on there as that's the name of my arch nemesis who I detest and despise greatly.

Some of these are nice but I agree most of them are pretty bad.
Kelly Ann Christensen from Overland Park, Johnson County, Kansas on December 28, 2019:
Thanks for the cute article and the laughs. I know people with several of those names, but overall I think you are right about most of them. Thankfully, none of our names are on your list. lol
Ally on November 11, 2019:
Does anyone else agree that Nevaeh actually sounds really pretty? I think it would be a beautiful name if it was spelled differently.
Ally on November 11, 2019:
A few of these names are pretty bad, like the one after Shirley. (I’m not typing that out.) There are people out there with these names, and they would be offended if they saw their names on this list. Also, Mabel is one of my favorite names, I just think it sounds so pretty.
Catherine Berry from Belgrade on September 12, 2019:
Yeah not all of those are ugly but I totally agree with most of your notes next to the names. Very entertaining regardless. Thank you!
Brad on August 27, 2019:
That's messed up
Idk My Name on August 04, 2019:
Okay, that is kind of ridiculous. Many of those names are beautiful! Besides, most of those names have no specific reason why they are on the list! Alot of people Ive seen on youtube or people I personally know have these names and if they saw this then they would probably get hurt by it!!!
Yetzel on May 12, 2019:
Yup , Yetzel
Corinda Jenkins on March 29, 2019:
My name is Corinda Jo. I’m told all the time what a beautiful name it is. You NEVER find it on any lists. I liked most of the names. What do you think of the name Atticus Creed? I think it’s unique. My future great-grands name
Farrah Young from Lagos, Nigeria on March 02, 2019:
Some of these names arent so bad, like Angel and Erma. For others, I wouldn't exactly call them ugly, but they aren't so nice-sounding like Gladys ( which sadly, happens to be my middle name). This is one name I hardly use and don't think I'll ever come to like.
Abrey on October 31, 2018:
My middle name is Ruth and my dad's name is Howard so that upset me
HoneyHawk830 on October 14, 2018:
Oh come on! Linda? Are you kidding me? It literally means pretty. A woman by the name of Linda named me Megan, however—a name I still hate and I’m surprised it’s never on the ugly names list. My dad is Cornelius. Never on these lists either and it’s a God-awful name which he despises. What about Seamus (pronounced “shame-us”)? Horrendous. Or Seth or Silas. Hedwig or Brunhilda? OMG horrible! I see “Melena” on here (pronounced “Mel-uh-nuh”), and anyone who’d do that must not know medical terminology. My daughter is Melina—-pronounced “Muh-lee-nuh”, which makes ALL the difference. I’ve seen the “Malina” variation, which I don’t like since the prefix “mal” in Latin basically means “bad”. A lot of foreign names just don’t translate well...like Hyman or Schlomo or Joaquin or Jadwiga or Svetlana or Shilpa or Darko or Cristobal...maybe they sound better in their native languages (my husband is Guillermo, and it’s much better sounding in Spanish)...but in English, Jesus, these names are rough.
Summergrl on July 23, 2018:
Many of these names are not even terrible like Gloria and Linda I have family members with those names however they don't sound like they would fit a baby or small child I get that.
shut up please on July 16, 2018:
although my name wasn’t on here, this kinda pisses me off. josephine should be taken off that list! it’s actually my favorite name and if i could change my name to josephine, i definitely would.
Emily Klein on May 17, 2018:
You people in the comments section need to grow up. So what, someone thinks your name, or a name that you like, is ugly. Cry me a river. It’s just a harmless opinion. I happen to be okay with my own name, but I couldn’t care less if someone else doesn’t like it because I’m not an insecure little baby. If you don’t like the list, then stop reading it and move on to something else.
On a less irritating note, I mostly agreed with the list, however I like Mabel and Otto, and I don’t think Hamish and Mallory are terrible.

I honestly don't understand this website. What is wrong with the names Addison, Ruby, Linda, and basically every name on this list? I'm sorry, but what was the point of this in the first place? FYI if you didn't know, Addison means "Son of Adam" what the heck is wrong with it? Just stop making people feel bad, I know SO many people with names on this list that are absolutely great. And thank you to the people who commented that there isn't such thing as an ugly name. This makes me sick.
Stella on November 26, 2017:
There is no such thing as ugliest name, it’s just to identify a person it’s not all about on personal taste based on their name. My name is Stella like you mentioned there and I think it’s not that bad I can accept it. At least most of the names are very unique and modern.
thegreatperson on August 26, 2017:
Linda and Mary were far from ugly
Anonymous on July 04, 2017:
An "Ugliest" is 100% relative and subjective term. Some names are sounded attractive, nice, cute, average, boring or awful. To me, I would say Theodore, Isaac, Bryce, Roger, Kyle, Zachary, Paige, Elana, Evelyn, Hillary, and Faith are awful names in my opinion.
GRR on April 27, 2017:

Sarah is a hideous, boring, overused name.
Serene on September 26, 2016:
How can you be the judge to ugly names? Many of these names are probably from other cultures or languages and have beautiful meaning. What if I took your name and said, "Wow, what an ugly name. You must have a terrible life!" The world is so diverse that these days unique names have a place. All sorts of kids are named all sorts of different names representing heir tribes, cultures and religion. Who gave you the exclusive right to call the parents out and say the child's name is ugly??? It's because of people like YOU the child will grow up insecure because he/she will stumble across your article and see their named mentioned. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Why are you people on here all the time? on June 30, 2016:
Seriously, people get a grip. Who cares what people say about your name. A name is just something to identify yourself to others. That doesn't make it ugly or pretty it just makes it you. Honestly I was just looking for names to use in my book. I would like to thank the person who came up with this list. It has strengthened my book with diversity. People just need to get a life the internet is not the only thing your eyeballs can be glued to.
Chasta74 on June 15, 2016:
Hanna, I have a Briar so I definitely agree. I also do not understand why most of these names made the list. I absolutely loved the name Briar as soon as my husband suggested it. As far as obscure meanings of names, unless you are a name researcher, no one cares. I also have a Carter which means "Cart Puller". Not once has anyone asked why I named my son after a puller of carts.
Annie Nonomous on June 13, 2016:
Research much? Half of these names that you bashed because their meanings were ugly aren't even correct. Cassandra doesn't mean entangled of men, it means Unheeded Prophetess. It's a beautiful and tragic story that you didn't learn about, whilst bashing a beautiful and powerful name. Did I mention that Cassandra was a princess? And Melena means yellow as a canary.
Something on May 24, 2016:

S on February 07, 2016:
I am sorry for giving you hate, but you are being a little inconsistent with your articles. You said Tabitha is a beautiful biblical name, yet it is on this list for worst baby names. You said that the advice you give for names is to make sure it has familial meaning, but you say names like John or Ingrid, popular for being European names from people a long time ago, are too common or ugly. Trying really hard to be "unconventional" is just as bad as celebrities naming their children odd noun names like "North". More noun names, do these sound familiar? Ocean, Holly, Bear, especially that bears are an animal that are known for being... violent? Maybe bear because of the spiritual meaning in Native American cultures, I don't know. Whatever you think is pretty and not pretty is fine, but now I am giving you my opinion. I respect your opinions of what names you like and don't like, but maybe don't give such negative comments about some names. Because, just remember that there are thousands of reasons historically throughout different cultures for naming people, some bad, some unfair, some beautiful. I do agree that people should give thought to their names and maybe not purposefully try to be "trendy", that you should think about what it means historically, with your ancestry, and what the name actually means, or what it has been associated with. What it is associated with throughout history is an important one too. I am sorry for the length of this.

Anonymous on November 30, 2015:
I have a friend with a child with a name on this list. She spent lots of time researching, and the meaning of the name is incorrect on this list. Cassandra means "unheeded prophetess" not "entangled of men". I am an avid learner of Greek mythology and Cassandra certainly did not entangle any men.

I'd add the name Kendra to that list. Naming a kid that abomination of a name is just awful. :( Fortunately it's not very popular but still. What an awful name.
Jennifer Mugrage from Columbus, Ohio on August 21, 2015:
Some of these are just awful. Others aren't really names. (Gorgonzola? Really? That's a cheese!)
Many of the others, though, I consider to be "strong" names. They are not pretty-sounding, but they have character, strong consonants, and have history behind them. For example, Agnes if you are of British heritage or Mercedes if you are Spanish-speaking. (It may sound kinda dumb in English, but it sounds great in Spanish! It just rolls off the tongue!)
Many names that I thought were really ugly when I first heard them as a kid, have now become favorites. Margaret (Meg, Maggie) is one of those.
Addison on July 28, 2015:
Addison, Maddison, not too bad. Seriously, you're a little harsh with the ' ugly names ' thing. I kinda take offense since I don't believe that Addison is a bad name. I might biased because it's mine though.
Ashley- It's a nice name. Yes, it is popular but it's still not ugly.
Crystal, Destiny, Diamond, Brittany, Kennedy, Jayden, Tiara, Octavia,Nevaeh. All beautiful names, amazing names really. I think they're quite unique and beautiful and you are throwing the term ugly around with wild abandon.

@hanna, I agree that Lilith is pretty. But today's Lilith is potentially tomorrow's Emma. These things always go in fads (and the fads spread faster now thanks to the internet).
hanna on March 30, 2015:
I'm pretty sure I understand why most of these are one this list, but for me, personally, I like names that aren't the typical: Hanna, Sophie, Jessica, Chloe, Emma, Riley (ooh, this one's REALLY unique! *sarcasm*), etc. Or the names that go too far: Apple, North, etc. I like dark, unusual, unique names that are neither too strange nor to common like: Lilith (night monster\goddess), Briar (thorny plant), Allistair (defender), Carlyle (from the walled city), Sage (wise). Besides the actually meaning of Briar, I like it. It just sounds pretty. Anyone else agree?
