I'm a mother to a teenage stepson and two daughters, and I'm baking one right now. I am taking one step at a time.
What Is a Baby Heartbeat App?
A mother's bond with her child cannot be compared to any other human relationship. An entire individual's mind, body, and soul is grown inside a mother's womb, and that is a connection that has no match. Generally, in pregnancy, a mother can feel her child's movements from week 18 onward, making her feel even more attached to the life growing inside her.
The medical practices related to pregnancy and childbirth have drastically changed in recent decades due to technological and scientific advancements. New machinery, drugs, medicine, and healthcare procedures have been developed and are now in practice. With such technological advancements, why can't we use technology to help us strengthen the bond with our child in utero? You may be surprised to discover that now you can listen to your baby's heartbeat with an app on your smartphone!
Are Fetal Heartbeat Apps Accurate?
These apps should only be used for fun. They are by no means 100% accurate. Do not use any of these apps as a replacement for an actual checkup.
Although listening to your baby's heartbeat on an app will give you some excitement and may be accurate to some extent, going to see a professional is always recommended. There is no evidence that these apps were developed by medical professionals, and it is unclear what sorts of quality assurance testing the apps underwent before they were released on the App Store.
5 Baby Heartbeat Apps for iOS
Below are five apps for iOS (Apple devices) that you can download to listen to your baby's heartbeat; please comment if you used any Android apps to listen to your baby's heartbeat when you were pregnant—much appreciated!
- Bellabeat Shell - Recommended
- My Baby Heart Rate Recorder
- Hear my Baby Heartbeat
- Womb Beats
1. Bellabeat Shell
The first on the list is Bellabeat by Shell, as it is the app I use the most. It is easy to use and has great reviews on the Apple App Store.
Unfortunately, the app is not available for Android devices.
Official Bella Support assists in downloading the app for Apple devices and provides answers on how to differentiate your heartbeat from your baby's.
There are no additional devices required to hear your baby’s heartbeat with this app! It is $3.99 to download on your Apple smartphone or tablet. You can even use it without any earphones.

Here is their official website for instructions and a link to download the app.
3. My Baby Heart Rate Recorder
This app, along with most of the apps on this list, should ideally be used in a quiet setting. Extra noise can disrupt the accuracy of the app. Be aware that there are ads in this app if you choose to download the free version.
4. Hear My Baby Heartbeat
You must wait until at least 12 weeks gestation to hear a loud and clear heartbeat. This app is not free but is available for just $4.99 on the App Store. It uses the microphone in your phone to detect sound waves.
5. Womb Beats
This app can be helpful in recording and preserving the sound of the heartbeat, and it enables you to add serene background music to the recording as well.
The app is only available for iOS devices and is free.
A Word of Caution
Fetal heartbeat apps are not suitable for all pregnant women. There are certainty messages of caution from the medical community about using these apps, and many medical professionals strongly advise against using them. Please remember that these apps are to be used purely for entertainment purposes (like beauty filters) and not as tools to replace professional evaluation and regular medical treatment during pregnancy.
I would say such apps are not suitable for:
- Women with existing anxiety issues
- Women who are paranoid due to unpleasant experiences in previous pregnancies
- Women who are on their first pregnancy (unless you are really relaxed and know when to seek necessary medical help)
I underlined necessary is because it is quite likely you might seek unnecessary medical help if anxiety kicks in and you start obsessing about whether there's an issue in your pregnancy.
Of course, to be on the safe side, it's best to seek medical help if you have a concern. However, sometimes, these kinds of apps can distort your perception, so they may be better suited for someone who has experienced pregnancy before and who, therefore, may be able to exercise better judgment when it comes to their baby's health.
Is It Safe to Listen to Your Baby’s Heartbeat at Home?
As a mother, protectiveness is one of your primary instincts. From the animal kingdom to the human species, parents feel a natural urge to keep their children safe. As a mother, you will want to choose what is best for your little one. A random app may seem sketchy or unreliable; it's completely normal to be worried about the health and safety of your unborn child.
You might be wondering whether this is a safe procedure to do at home. There is no harm in listening to or recording your baby's heartbeat through an app at home. A trick is to put your phone on airplane mode when using the baby heartbeat apps. Some mothers will avoid using these apps due to potential radiation from their phones, which may not be good for the fetus. Putting the phone in airplane mode will take care of this issue.
Why Should You Listen to Your Baby’s Heartbeat With an App?
There are two kinds of apps when it comes to listening to your baby's heartbeat. The first does not require any additional purchases or accessories, while the second type may need an add-on device (not covered here).
They Help You Feel Close to Your Baby
The idea of the app is that you may be able to listen to your precious child's heartbeat anywhere you are. During pregnancy, visits to the obstetrician or midwife might be fairly frequent, but you may also wish to hear your baby's heartbeat in between appointments.
You Can Feel Comforted by the Sound of Your Baby's Heartbeat
Many expectant mothers find it comforting to listen to their baby's heartbeat. It helps to soothe the mothers and allows them to bond with their children. And it has been made as easy as playing Candy Crush with these new apps.
Your Bond With Your Baby Is Heightened
Although these apps are not meant to give the same result that a professional can and their level of accuracy is uncertain, they are fun to use and add another dimension to your connection with the life growing inside of you.
You Can Share Your Pregnancy With Family
As most couples will only go alone to the doctor, grandparents, and siblings along with other family members may not get an opportunity to listen to the precious sound. With baby heartbeat apps, the sound can even be recorded! So, if you'd like to share this endearing experience with the child's grandparents or siblings, etc., many of these apps offer that capability.
My Obsession With Heartbeat Apps During Pregnancy
I had a hard time conceiving, so when I found out I was pregnant (my second pregnancy), my approach to my pregnancy was very different from when I had my daughter. I felt blessed to be able to conceive, and I had the time to explore new technology that was not as popular back when I had my daughter.
When I stumbled upon discussions about heartbeat apps in pregnancy forums, I downloaded every single one that I could find!
Fetal Heartbeat Apps Are a Fun Way to Bond With Your Baby
A heartbeat is the fundamental sign and symbol of life within a human being. Hearing your child's heartbeat before they are born can help you develop a greater bond with them. Be sure to note the various apps' recommended minimum weeks of gestation for best results. Remember that you should only use these apps for enjoyment; please consult with a doctor or midwife for medical advice or if you have any concerns during your pregnancy.
