Best Nicknames for Richard

Updated on February 8, 2016

Faced with the dilemma of having three friends with the same first name? It can get tricky in social gatherings when you call across a room “Hey, Richard!” only to have all three of them respond simultaneously. It’s almost like they were meant to have the same name with how they respond all the same, and although it can be funny sometimes when they all respond to the same beckon, it can also be frustrating!

Calling them “Thing 1,” Thing 2,” and “Thing 3” would make matters easier, but let’s be real here; they need some nicknames! Lucky for you, with a name like Richard, there’s plenty of nicknames out there that they can go by, and they may already have one that family calls them by! Perhaps you’re not in this “three friend” scenario and you’re simply researching baby names, and wish to know more about nicknames for Richard, you’ve stumbled upon the right place!

Richard Meaning and Origin

It’s always interesting to learn how names came about, where they came from, and when they originated. Taking a peek into the history, we’ll learn quite a bit about the name Richard before we move into the nicknames for Richard.

The name Richard, although quite popular in America, is of Germanic origin, and when the compound is broken down, you get ric (meaning ruler and power) and hard (meaning brave and hardy) together making the name mean “brave power” or “Powerful, strong ruler.” Having such a strong name with a solid meaning behind it makes it one of the reasons why it became so popular in the first place!

Much like the name William, the Normans introduced this name into Britain and it became the name of three rulers: King Richards I, II, and III of England. Is it a coincidence that three people named Richard became rulers? Well perhaps the second two since it was a name passed on. Either way, it sounds like a terrific, strong name for a leader! It never hurts to have a name of royalty, either!

So now that you are aware of a few things behind the name of Richard, let’s get into the nicknames!

Wow! I am impressed. I had no idea there were so many nicknames for Richard. I just basically knew about Rich, Rick, and Dick (the last of which I would never use). Truly, Richards have quite a few options.
