While we still have a long way to go in accepting everyone for who they are and who they love, even in 2022, we've still come so far — especially when we compare how society treated the LGBTQ+ community decades ago. Going back a couple of generations, it's easy to understand how it must have been even more terrifying to come out for the first time, especially while worrying whether or not those you loved would still accept you when you did.

But even in the 1950s, there were parents who happily and unconditionally loved their children, regardless of whether they were gay or straight. One man who grew up during that time is sharing his story on TikTok, and it's really beautiful to see.

In the story, the man was still in high school and all made up in glitter when he hid from his dad, who came to watch him in an assembly. After his performance, his dad asked him, "When you're a full grown man, who are you gonna go out with at night?" As it turned out, he actually knew his son was gay the whole time — and he imparted some important wisdom.

"Don't sneak, because if you sneak like you did today, it means you think you're doing the wrong thing," his dad advised him. "And if you run around spending your whole life thinking you're doing the wrong thing, then you'll ruin your immortal soul."

There's a lot more to the story, and it took the man awhile to really understand what that meant. But when he did, he knew it meant that his dad was proud of him.

This is what truly loving your children really means. We could all learn something from this dad!
