Yes, you can take a pregnancy test even if you haven’t missed your period yet. First though, you need to make sure you’re close enough to your period to get an accurate result. If you take a home pregnancy test (sometimes called an HPT) an entire week before you’re expecting your period to start, you could end up getting a test that says you’re not pregnant when you actually are. That’s because it takes time for pregnancy hormones to build up enough in your body to produce a positive result on the test.
If you’re anxious to find out, pick up a test that can detect pregnancy early. My favorite is First Response Early Response (not the digital). Read the directions on the box, but personally I’ve been able to get a positive result with these as early as five days before I’m supposed to get my period. They’re pretty sensitive!
